I'll huff and I'll puff...

Some damage at the Esquire

...and I'll blow your trees down.

Last night we had 70 MPH straight line winds and some possible tornadoes in the Champaign-Urbana area. A few minutes after the tornado siren went off I headed for the basement along with two of my neighbors and their dogs. Listening to Ed Keiser on the radio, it was clear that there were tornadoes fairly close south of Champaign, but nothing around here really fell.

Or at least I thought it didn't. The pictures in this GSLIS professor's blog entry are about a half-mile from my house. So I think I'm glad I was in the basement.

I drove around town a bit and checked out the damage, and I didn't see much. All the houses out on Florida where I used to live were fine, which is surprising, because there's nothing to break the force of the wind out there. I did see the damage at the Esquire, and quite a bit appears to have fallen down at the construction site for the new convention center.

Ah, spring in tornado country.
