My car tried to throw me off a building!
Ok, so maybe not. But I was pulling into a space on the top level of a parking garage this morning when my car revved unexpectedly, surged forward, and smacked into the retaining wall hard enough to shatter my front bumper. (But not hard enough to set off the airbag. Thank god for small favors.)
I know the first thing people will think is that I just hit the gas pedal by mistake, and I can't swear that that's not what happened, but I'm 90% sure that it wasn't. When my car stopped my foot was on the brake (firmly!), and, since I was already braking as I turned into the space, I don't think I could have moved my foot from brake to gas to brake again in the 1 or 2 seconds that the car had its power surge. Anyway, I'm super-nervous about driving my car now, so I called the mechanic and was able to get them to squeeze it in this afternoon to check it out. Hopefully they'll have some news for me tomorrow, in the sense of some actual mechanical failure that might have caused this. Otherwise I'm afraid my car might be trying to tell me it's turned into the Werecar. Will it be out for the blood of innocent pedestrians next?
There's a possibility that this could be related to a problem I was having over Thanksgiving and Christmas. My speedometer freaked out a couple of times when I went over 70, and even though the speed of the car didn't change, the speedometer needle went swinging between 80 and 85 or so. I didn't take the car in, because it didn't seem to affect the way the car drove, but maybe I should have.
Ooh, hey, it looks like Fords have a history of unintended acceleration. Well, at least it makes me feel a little less crazy, if a lot less reassured.
I don't want my weird little blue car to be unreliable. Think good thoughts for an easy (and cheap) repair solution!
